Further steps on runaway dogs

If your dog is not back with you after a few hours, you should familiarize yourself with the next steps. It is still important to keep calm. Keep in mind that dogs are true survivors even in winter and, with your support, can find their way back to you after days or even weeks. We are there for you and help you!

Towing home (HWS)

The HWS is one of the most successful measures in animal search. The purpose of this train is to help the dog get home. Basically, it is important to clarify who is suitable for doing the whiplash, because the owner is not always the closest reference person for the pet. A dog friend or a second dog is also theoretically possible. For dogs without a caregiver, it makes sense to drag meat soup. Please contact us beforehand.

Imagine the home as the sun and the train home as the rays of the sun that lead towards the house.

A T-shirt worn by the caregiver before the runaway is tied to a leash. Now you cycle away from home in one direction. After about 1-2 km you turn around and leave your T-shirt dragged on the floor while driving home. When you get home, you take your T-shirt back up and drive in a different direction. After 1-2 km you turn around again and let the T-shirt drag on the floor. You do this in a star shape from all directions, always in the direction of home. Please never drive over rails, large busy roads, etc.!

HWS with the car ideally works like this: A friend of the family drives his car (i.e. a car that is unfamiliar to the dog) and takes the owner with him. After driving 2 km in one direction, the owner gets out and walks home dragging a worn shirt along the ground behind him. The acquaintance picks it up at home and drives 2km in a different direction. From there the owner goes home with the dragging T-shirt. You do this in a star shape from all directions, always in the direction of home. If the runaway dog has a dog friend, he can be taken with you on the way home. This makes the way home even more attractive for the runaway dog!

Important: If the runaway dog has only been with the owner for a few days and has not yet established a (firm) bond with him or there is no permanent reference person / reference animal on site, you should definitely work with sausage water lugging in addition to the shirt. To do this, a few liters of meat broth with, for example, liver sausage, cheese, Viennese (which the refrigerator produces in terms of intensive things) is boiled, sieved and the liquid is filled into plastic bottles. Holes are made in the lids so that broth drips out when the bottle is turned upside down. The cervical spine can be strengthened with it.

Flyer

If the dog is not back after a few hours, flyers are essential to get attention and report sightings. Flyers can either be requested from Tasso or designed yourself.

When designing, it should be noted that two / three smaller photos make the animal on a lamppost easier to recognize than a large one. When it comes to text, less is more, so that readers can grasp the most important things quickly. In order to be able to check sighting reports, descriptions of the collar and harness should be missing. Telephone numbers are of course also important, ideally with small tear-off slips.

The owners should not fly any flyers themselves so as not to spread their scent wildly into the area. This would make it almost impossible to return via the cervical spine. You should therefore mobilize friends or acquaintances who are not a reference person to the runaway animal. Exception: The owners can also fly out on the HWS route.

The number of flyers hung is another important criterion for attracting attention. Several hundred pieces over a large area around the run-off area (possibly also a sighting area) are required at a minimum, in the country even more within a radius of several kilometers. It is important to fly to prominent places and junctions: In front of the bakery, supermarket, butcher, hairdresser, riding stables, voluntary fire brigade, taxi driver, intersections, main paths, etc.

Please note: Flyers are only allowed with prior permission from the responsible authority. Disregard of these regulations can be punished as administrative offenses with a fine. The following is therefore not officially permitted: Placing posters, for example, on trees, lamp posts, street signs, benches, construction fences, power boxes, rubbish bins, etc. Even in private areas, flyers are only permitted with the prior consent of the person entitled (owner, leaseholder, owner, etc.) . Otherwise you violate the rights of third parties.

Unofficially, people usually turn a blind eye. So that it stays that way, we kindly ask you to remove the flyer when the missing animal is back home! Thanks.

Search dogs

Using a search dog does not always make sense. However, there are situations that require action. The following indications speak for a quick use:

  • The dog has run away on a leash and there is a risk of being stuck.

  • The dog had an accident, e.g. with a car. There is a risk that he will be injured.

  • The dog is already quite old or still very young (a few months old) and there is a risk of disorientation.

  • The dog is dependent on medication and threatens to be harmed without it.

  •

A scented article is required for a search dog mission. This should be secured in good time. Anything with which the runaway animal has usually come into contact is suitable: dog blankets, dog brushes, excrement, dishes, toys, etc. The surface should not be smooth because the smell does not adhere well here. The smell article is put by the owners in a large odorless bag (e.g. garbage bag) and put aside (e.g. on a cupboard). All people and animals that have come into contact with this article must be present at the start so that the search dog can exclude their smells as the smell to be searched for.

Caution! There are many dog owners who privately trail their dogs. These dogs are usually not sufficiently trained! Mission experience, mission tactics, etc. are also immensely important. Our team has professionally trained search dogs and dog handlers who are against a low  Expense allowance  go into action.

Feeding place

A feeding station is not set up immediately, but only after a few days or weeks, if the dog has been spotted in one place, ideally even several times.  It can be tied to the area with a feeding station so that it can then be secured either manually, with a live trap or by distance anesthesia. The use of a game camera is essential, as otherwise it cannot be assessed when the feeding point is accepted which animal is eating the feed. The feeding station must be filled with attractive feed every day by the same person. If you are unsure when a feeding place makes sense and which food you should take, we will be happy to advise you!

Live trap

The use of a live trap makes sense if all attempts to manually secure the dog have failed. In some cases this can happen relatively quickly, for example because there is no close relationship with the owners, they are not mobile or not on site (vacation). Since a live trap is always connected to a feeding station to be looked after, which is located in the trap as a lure, the use of a game camera is also essential here. Live traps and wildlife cameras can be used for a fee  can be borrowed from us.
